I don't typically post about my views on 'hot ticket' items but this is a cause I am truly passionate about- and it is a cause that I think every human being should be passionate about if you care about our society, our earth, and our future.
For those unfamiliar with the company Monsanto here it is in a nut shell: Monsanto is the creator of the pesticide Round-Up, a pesticide that is used around the globe and sprayed over all those perfect looking fruits and veggies in your non-organic sections of super markets. Monsanto is also the creator of the GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) which make up those perfect fruits and veggies. When Monsanto realized that their pesticides were also hurting crops they decided to pour millions of dollars into creating a hopped up version of our earths bounty and make them resistant to pesticides so that commercial farmers could spray and spray and spray and not damage their crops.
The sad truth is- we do not yet know what these GMO products are fully capable of and in the mean time we are poisoning ourselves and our earth. What we do know is that pesticides are terrible for humans, causing thousands of deaths, birth defects, and long term illnesses, killing our ozone layer, our animals, our bees ... basically, we are slowly killing life (not to be over dramatic). It is getting harder and harder for organic farmers to protect their crops as the GMO seeds are cross pollinated by nature and if we don't act fast we won't have any option but to purchase 'test-tube foods' because the 'real' food will be gone.
Right now there is a bill (Monsanto Protection Act) that is pretty much allowing Monsanto to do as they please- including not forcing companies to label their foods when they contain GMOs. I don't know about you, but I know that I want to know what I am eating and I want to know that it is real food! I want to choice to be mine on what lands on my plate and I am quite alright if my apple isn't supersized and shiny- it came from the earth, let it show signs of it!
Tomorrow, Saturday October 12, there is a global peaceful protest as we March Against Monsanto. We are standing up for the right to know what is in our foods, to protect the family and organic Farmers, and to stop corporations from thinking about the profit and start thinking about the people. It is not too late for you to join a march, check here for a march near you!
I am so pumped and ready to participate in something I feel so passionate about- follow along with me here on IG and check the #MAM and #MarchAgainstMonsanto hashtags tomorrow to see people who are truly caring about our future!
